David De Gea was arguably the best goalkeeper on the world at one point in his career. He made incredible saves and almost singlehandedly won games for the team. However, a few mistakes since the start of the 2018/2019 season made many fans question his ability and made others wonder if he was really past his best.

Because goalkeepers are the last line of defence, they are expected to be at their best at all times. The main thing De Gea has had a problem with is concentration. He often switches off in big games and makes an error that is redeemed with a world class save a minute later. So we know the quality is still there.

Here are the top five records he has broken as a Manchester United goalkeeper;

5. Highest number of saves for Manchester United

With a club that has had legendary goalkeepers like Edwin Van der Ser, Peter Schmeichel, Harry Gregg and Alex Stepney, you would think that at least one of them would have made more saves than De Gea in the Premier League.

The Spaniard currently holds the record for most saves for United in the Premier League with 868. Van Der Sar only made 359.

4. Highest number of saves of the season award

The BBC Match of the Day’s save of the season award is given out to the best save pulled off by a Goalkeeper in the Premier League. De Gea has won it 5 times in a row, becoming the only goalkeeper in history to ever do so.

This is still a record that has yet to be broken and one cannot help wonder if he can win the award again next season.

3. Highest number of saves in a single Premier League match

De Gea shares this record with Tim Krul and Vito Mannone. Yes, the same Timo Krul that saved two penalties against Manchester United this season in a single game.

De Gea equaled this record in 2017 during the game against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. He made a total of 14 saves making it the joint most in Premier League history.

2. Highest number of cleansheets for Manchester United in the Premier League

As stated earlier, United have had truly legendary goalkeepers but none of them had the same amount of cleansheets as De Gea in the Premier League. The Spaniard kept his 133th League cleansheet for the club in the final league game of the 2019/2020 season against game Leicester City.

This was the same season where pundits acknowledged that he was done at the top level and had become a liability to Solskjaer’s men.

1. Highest number of player of the year awards for Manchester United

De Gea won the Sir Matt Busby player of the year award 4 times. He is the only goalkeeper in United’s history to win it 4 times as well as being the only player to also win it 4 times. No outfield player has achieved this milestones for United. Not even the Legendary Cristiano. Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs.

After over 9 years of extraordinary service, David De Gea has become one of the best goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history and one of the best in the world. Minor mistakes and lack of concentration cannot change that fact
