Source says Saints’ Drew Brees has rib fractures, collapsed lung

Although the Saints are riding a six-game winning streak and are sitting atop the NFC South, their resourcefulness and resilience will be tested in coming weeks.

A 27-13 victory over the 49ers on Sunday was costly in terms of injuries that affected quarterback Drew Brees, left tackle Terron Armstead, cornerback Marshon Lattimore and others.

Though head coach Sean Payton declined to comment on any injuries, a person familiar with the situation said Brees has multiple rib fractures and a collapsed lung. The person spoke on condition of anonymity.

Brees is expected to miss several games while his lung and ribs heal, meaning the offense will be primarily in the hands of Jameis Winston, who was selected first overall by Tampa Bay in 2015.

During his five seasons with the Bucs, Winston was as mercurial as he was prolific. He passed for 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns last season, but also threw 30 interceptions. His inconsistency led the Buccaneers to pursue New England QB Tom Brady and let Winston go.

When Winston signed a one-year deal with New Orleans, he did so to serve as a backup and refine his game while learning from Payton and Brees, who have formed one of the most prolific coach-quarterback tandems in NFL history.

“My main job’s to serve my teammates, and help put us in a position to win a football game,“ Winston said.

Cornerback cleared: Former New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker was cleared of robbery charges in Florida after his alleged victims’ attorney was arrested on extortion charges.

The Broward County State Attorney’s Office announced it was dropping all charges against Baker shortly after the county sheriff’s office arrested attorney William Dean, 50, and charged him with extortion.

Baker, 23, had been charged with holding up four men at gunpoint at a May barbecue in suburban Fort Lauderdale. Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar, who originally had been accused of assisting Baker, previously had been cleared.

The sheriff’s office says Dean told Baker’s attorney, Bradford Cohen, that the three alleged victims he represented would stop cooperating with prosecutors or change their stories if they were paid $266,000 each.
