Sheffield Wednesday chances of surviving in the Championship received a huge boost on Wednesday night when their 12-point deduction for financial impropriety was halved.

The Yorkshire club were found to have breached the EFL’s spending rules after accounting the £60million sale of their Hillsborough stadium in the wrong financial year.

Including that transaction during the 2017-18 season left Wednesday with a pre-tax profit of £2.5m. The sale of their home ground made sure the club did not fall foul of profitability and sustainability rules on their balance sheet.
