Sancho fires Dortmund back to winning ways

Jadon Sancho was on target for the third time this season as Borussia Dortmund came from behind against Augsburg to record their first Bundesliga win in four games on Matchday 19.

Borussia Dortmund 3-1 Augsburg
Goals: 0-1
Hahn (10′), 1-1 Delaney (26′), 2-1 Sancho (63′), 3-1 Uduokhai (o.g. 75′)

Augsburg got the better of Dortmund on the second weekend of the season and looked to have found the formula for success once again with just 10 minutes played at the Signal Iduna Park. Iago’s cross found Andre Hahn in front of goal, and he made the most of the space afforded to him to find the top corner past Marwin Hitz – the Swiss stopper starting ahead of injured countryman Roman Bürki.

From that point on, however, Dortmund dominated. Sancho and Erling Haaland had already fired wide when the hosts were given the perfect chance to level from the penalty spot after Iago was adjudged to have blocked Gio Reyna‘s shot with his hand.

Haaland stepped up to take his second Bundesliga penalty, but smashed his effort off the crossbar. Four minutes later, though, Dortmund levelled through Thomas Delaney – the Dane heading in Marco Reus‘ free-kick for his first goal in almost two years. Edin Terzic’s side remained in control with Augsburg sitting deep in their own half, though Marco Richter did fire a shot narrowly wide at the end of the first half with Augsburg’s second attempt on goal of the game.

The second half continued in the same vein, with Dortmund in control of the ball against a deep Augsburg set-up. Reyna had a huge chance to put his side in front, but couldn’t bury a header from two yards out after Sancho’s shot was blocked into the air.

In the end, it was the Englishman, who brought his side in front for the first time. Raphael Guerreiro lobbed a delightful pass over the Augsburg defence down the left for Sancho to chase, and he coolly slotted past Rafal Gikiewicz for his third goal of the league campaign. The points were sealed with 15 minutes to play when Haaland’s cut-back from the left was put into his own net by Felix Uduokhai in front of goal.

Augsburg’s misery was compounded by seeing Iago go off injured late on as Dortmund went on to secure their first win in four Bundesliga games. There was a special moment too for Sancho, who ended the game as captain with Reus being brought off in the final minutes.
