The 49ers won’t be alone in missing key personnel when they face the New York Giants on Sunday, as Giants coach Joe Judge confirmed Monday that running back Saquon Barkley tore his right ACL a day earlier in a loss to the Bears and will miss the rest of the season.

Barkley ran for 1,307 yards as a rookie in 2018, then had 1,003 yards on the ground in 2019 despite missing three games because of an ankle injury.

The 49ers could be without four Week 2 starters for the Week 3 game against the Giants because of injuries.

McCaffrey update: Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is expected to miss at least four weeks because of a high ankle sprain suffered Sunday.

Last season, McCaffrey was third in the NFL with 1,387 yards rushing and had 116 catches for 1,005 yards.

“I think the biggest thing you can do right now is stay strong and fight through it,” McCaffrey said. “They say four to six weeks, well that’s a challenge to me. Hopefully I can get back a lot earlier than that.”
