There are several high-profile players currently looking for new teams, so Starsport thought it’d only be right to compile the best starting XI from all the available free agents

A slew of big-name players are still on the lookout for new clubs following the closure of the international transfer window.

And it’s not just fringe players who are trying to find new homes. Fully-fledged internationals are also on the hunt for new teams too.

After traipsing through the extensive list of players still searching for new teams, Starsport has complied an impressive free-agent starting XI.

Our starting XI features plenty of household names, some of which will come as a surprise to you. Check it out below.

Goalkeeper: Orjan Nyland

Surprisingly, the Norwegian had his contract with Aston Villa terminated on Monday night. The decision, however, was a mutual one. With Championship and Premier League experience to his name, the 30-year-old would make a solid addition to any top-flight squad.

Right-back: Nataniel Clyne

England international Clyne is now a free agent after the expiration of his contract with Liverpool, who sent him out on loan to Bournemouth for the second half of the 2019-20 season. Although he’s been deprived of regular first-team football over the last few seasons, teams could do far worse than to add the experienced 29-year-old to their squad.

Centre-back: Ezequiel Garay

The Argentina international has been without a club since February when he asked Valencia to terminate his contract after he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury.

With experience playing in Spain, Russia and Portugal to his name, Garay, 33, could make a perfect short-term signing for a club looking to increase their defensive options.

Centre-back: Ashley Williams

The Wales international is available on a free following the expiration of his contract with Bristol City. At the age of 36, Williams will be hard-pressed to bag himself a spot in a Premier League squad. He would, however, make the perfect addition to a Championship team looking to make their way to the Promised Land.

Left-back: Gael Clichy

The Arsenal invincible is currently twiddling his thumbs following the expiration of his contract with Turkish champions Istanbul Basaksehir. A return to the Premier League is unlikely. If he wants to continue playing at a decent level and earn a good wage, he should consider a move to the MLS.

Centre-mid: Jack Wilshere

The most injury-plagued midfielder of the last decade is currently without a club after the mutual termination of his contract with West Ham.

If he can manage to stay fit, Wilshere – 28 – could offer a good Premier League or Championship side a solid creative option in midfield.

Centre-mid: Yohan Cabaye

After returning to Ligue 1 last summer to play with Saint-Etienne, the former Newcastle midfielder is currently looking for a new club.

At the age of 34, a move back to the Premier League is unlikely for Cabaye. The most likely destination for the Frenchman is probably the MLS.

Striker: Mario Mandzukic

The former Juventus hitman is without a club after playing out his one-year deal with Qatari side Al-Duhail. At this juncture of his career, he could very well look for another big payday in the Middle East or opt to see out his playing days in the MLS.

Striker: Danny Welbeck

The former Arsenal and Manchester United hitman is clubless after being released by Watford on Tuesday. The England international may harbour ambitions of signing for another Premier League side, but he should focus his efforts on playing in the Championship.
