Aston Villa transfer news: Argentinian has officially joined Dean Smith’s side from the Emirates Stadium on a four-year deal bringing an end to a ten-year association with the Gunners

Aston Villa have completed a move for Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez with the stopper signing a four-year deal at Villa Park.

Martinez becomes Villa ‘s third signing of the summer after the arrivals of Matty Cash and Ollie Watkins from Nottingham Forest and Brentford respectively.

He will compete with Tom Heaton, Orjan Nyland, Lovre Kalinic and Jed Steer for the nunber one jersey with at least ‘keeper likely to exit the club before the transfer window ends.

When a player departs a club it is rare for an interview to be conducted with the selling club but it is a mark of the impact that Martinez has had in his ten years at the club, during which time he struck up a bond with the fans.

More recently, Martinez stepped up to become the club’s number one in place of the injured Bernd Leno and made nine of his 16 Premier League appearances for the club last season.

He won an FA Cup and Community Shield in the last couple of months too but departs because keeping hold of the number one shirt is not guaranteed.

Arsenal posted a statement to their website which read: “Everyone at Arsenal thanks Emi for his contribution to club over the past 10 years and we wish him all the best for the future.”

And on Twitter they added: “Thank you, Emi,” with a love heart emoji.

Indeed, the interviewer says at the end of Arsenal’s chat with Martinez: “Emi, it’s been an absolute pleasure and we wish you all the best with Aston Villa.”

Martinez joined Arsenal from Independiente back in 2010 and made 38 career appearances for the club.

He spent time on loan at Championship side Reading as recently as last year.
