Édouard Mendy and formidable back four lift Chelsea

Chelsea’s Champions League campaign pits them against French side Rennes this week. Whatever happens it is a safe bet the result will be nowhere near as positive as the last time Frank Lampard encountered the Ligue 1 club. Rennes was where Lampard turned this summer when finally conceding that Kepa Arrizabalaga, the £71.6 million goalkeeper, was a failure.

Édouard Mendy was the replacement Lampard identified, a miserly £22 million the fee he paid. After the Senegal international kept Chelsea’s fourth straight clean sheet at Turf Moor — their best such run in four years — it is not too fanciful to think that the 28-year-old was the missing link they needed all along to compete for the Premier League title.
