Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has set a big challenge for his new-look squad.

Chelsea have gone all-out this summer to try and bridge the gap to the top two.

The Blues finished fourth in the table last season, 33 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool.

They were also 15 points behind second-placed Manchester City, and have started splashing the cash in order to shorten that gap for next season.

So far, Chelsea have spent £140m on new talent, including £53m Werner, and are expected to continue spending.

Kai Havertz is set to join in the coming days, becoming their all-time record signing at an initial £72m – rising to £90m.

And Werner has lifted the lid on his talks with Lampard before he signed, and opened up on the manager’s ambition to lift the title.

He said: “The work with the manager recently has been really good.

“He’s been showing and explaining to the whole team, not just me, what we can do on the pitch and how to improve on last season.

“He’s been great to work with and he’s been discussing his plans for the future, and how we want to battle with teams like Man City and Liverpool.

“I think Chelsea is a big club and with this team that we have, I think we can reach a new level.

“We have some very good players here and the manager is there to show us the way, and help us improve.

“We’ve worked a lot on tactical things, as well as our strength and fitness, to make sure we are ready for the start of the season.”

Werner took just four minutes to find the net against Brighton on his debut for the club, finishing from close range after Callum Hudson-Odoi nodded down Hakim Ziyech’s cross.

The striker discussed his transition from Germany to London, and declared he now feels at home in the capital.

He continued: “When I first came to England it was hard to understand everyone’s English, because I haven’t had to speak this language since my school days.

“It’s not been as hard as I expected though, everyone has helped me settle in. People have spoken very slowly so I can understand and right now I feel very happy.

“I can understand everything and communicate in English.”
