Chelsea have not given up hope of signing Declan Rice and will go back in for the West Ham star in the January transfer window, according to reports.

Rice has emerged as one of England’s best players after shining for West Ham in the heart of midfield, and he has attracted long-term interest from London rivals Chelsea.

The Blues were in hot pursuit of Rice, a former youth product of the club, in the summer transfer window but a £60million move failed to materialise after they failed to offload a number of fringe players.

But according to The Athletic, Chelsea are hoping Rice ignores any of West Ham’s advances to tie home down to a new contract at the London Stadium as the Blues look to snap up his signature in January.

Chelsea’s move for Rice in the last transfer window didn’t come to fruition as the Blues were reportedly unable to sell players needed to raise the necessary funds for his signature.

Chelsea were ruthless in the summer window, spending £253million on the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Edouard Mendy while signing Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr on free transfers.

But after spending so much, Chelsea didn’t have the required money to splash out on Rice and were also struggling to cut down a bloated squad.

It has been reported that the Blues had two outgoings in place to get a deal for Rice over the line in the summer but both moves collapsed close to the October 5 deadline.

Frank Lampard is desperate to add Rice to his books as he views the England international as the perfect holding midfielder for his new-look side.

But Lampard knows how tough a task it will be to land Rice with West Ham desperate to keep their star player.

West Ham are reportedly readying Rice a new deal which would double his wages to £120,000-per-week.

Though Rice’s current contract runs until 2024, the Hammers will offer a one-year extension to fend off interest from the Blues before the transfer window re-opens in January.

West Ham co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold are committed to keeping Rice at the club, having already raised his salary from £3,000-a-week to £60,000-a-week in the first two years of his five-year deal.

Rice is pivotal to David Moyes’s side, who have started off the Premier League season in impressive style after a tough opening two matches.

After losing their opening two games, West Ham have thrashed Wolves and Leicester, while earning impressive draws against both Manchester City and Tottenham – incredibly coming from three goals behind against the latter.

They fell to a narrow defeat against Liverpool on the weekend in the Premier League, but Rice once again shone for West Ham as they took the lead at Anfield.
