Toto Wolff said Mercedes defeat at Max Verstappen in the season-finishing Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix went about as “a token punishment” for the group.
Mercedes cleared to a seventh continuous arrangement of drivers’ and constructors’ titles in 2020, finishing the season with 13 triumphs from 17 races.
The group was pursuing its seventh win in succession at the Yas Marina Circuit, however battled to coordinate Verstappen’s movement in the Red Bull as he ruled the race from post position.
Verstappen at last dominated the race by more than 15 seconds as Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton completed second and third individually for Mercedes.
Mercedes group supervisor Wolff felt that both Red Bull vehicles were “just speedier than us” through the Abu Dhabi weekend, and expected that Alexander Albon would pass Hamilton for third in the end organizes.
“You can see that everyone has shortcomings, and we weren’t on our A game this end of the week,” Wolff said.
“That’s basically true. Red Bull won true to form. You can see that Albon additionally had an excellent race, so they have an awesome race vehicle, and shows that when their vehicle is in the opportune spot, the two drivers do a truly great job.
“Most likely Albon’s movement was snappier than us by the end. They might have been well ahead, and far more detestable for us.”
“We’re leaving this race with a token punishment. It was anything but an extraordinary end of the week for us. It was a vehicle that has never allowed us to as the year progressed, perhaps separated from this last end of the week.”
Wolff clarified that both Bottas and Hamilton had to deal with their tires after the wellbeing vehicle constrained an early change to the hard compound tire that Mercedes was questionable would make it as far as possible.
“Him and Lewis were taking care of the tires a great deal, since it was not satisfactory the hard would go on until the end, and there was more movement in both of them,”Wolff said.
“You can see toward the end, we saw through area one, that our vehicle wasn’t just pivoting five and six, and the last area wasn’t extraordinary.
“We just had an understeery vehicle all day today. We had a vehicle that is acceptable on Friday, however bad on Saturday. We attempted the two headings, debilitated the back, none of that made a difference.
“I think by one way or another we didn’t take care of business.”
